Siesta Key is Rated in the Top 10 World's Best Beaches
On
April 6 a film crew from the Travel Channel was on Siesta Key to shoot
footage for a television show, "America's Best Beaches", which will air
on a future date.
Siesta
Key is consistently rated in the top 10 beaches of Florida, the U.S.
and the world. The sand of Siesta Key is composed of 99% quartz crystal.
Unlike most beaches that are made of crushed shells, rocks or lava, this
sand is pure white, and as fine as sugar. It has been described as
"dazzling" and never gets hot. The quartz attracts many people
that come to Siesta to feel the vibration of the sand. The water's edge
is packed and makes a wonderful walking beach.

Turtle
Beach
Siesta Key is 8
miles long and the entire coast can be walked at the water's edge, with
the exception of Turtle Beach on the far south end of the key. Sarasota
County has plans to refurbish Turtle Beach to regain width and restore
Midnight Pass just south of Turtle Beach, which is currently filled in
with sand.
What
Makes Crescent Beach, Siesta Key so Special?
The film
crew interviewed beach-goers, inquiring what makes Siesta Key Beach the
best. The visitors and locals were quick to say that the sand is clean,
powder soft, pure white, no shells mixed in the sand, it stays cool to the
touch and it is easy to walk on. The water does not "wash the sand
out" from under your feet, and the beach slopes gently into the gulf.
Sand sculptors
were also interviewed, giving Siesta Key and A+ for the best sand to
create sand sculptures, large works of art that wash away with the tide.
The
Drum Circle has Gained International Notoriety
The Sunday night
drum circle has become a weekly tradition at the Siesta Key Beach.
The musicians and dancers that participate were filmed as well as
volleyball players, children playing, and families having a picnic in the
gazebo area.
 The
Village of Siesta Key
The Village at the
north end of Siesta Key was of interest to the TV crew, with the
assortment of shops, open-air restaurants and so many people obviously
having an enjoyable time.
The Travel Channel
is an international television show that is a part of the Discovery
Networks, viewed in over 50 million homes in the United States. Sarasota
is no longer the gulf coast's best-kept secret!

Siesta Key was chosen "Best
Overall in the 1987 International Sand Contest. The world wide
competition included entries from throughout the world. The Sand of Siesta Key was judged by David Aubrey,
Director of Coastal Research at the renowned Woods Hole Oceanographic
Institute in Massachusetts, to be the whitest and finest in texture. The geology department of Harvard University found the sand to
be 99% pure quartz.
