   School Choice

Sarasota County has an open boundary policy you may apply to go to a school outside of your "district". Students are assigned to a "district" school based on their legal domicile.  However, new students to the county may participate in school choice by completing a school choice application prior to attending that district school.  Students already enrolled may apply each winter for a school choice assignment in the current year.  ADMITTANCE TO A SCHOOL IS BASED ON THE AVAILABILITY OF A SEAT AND IT IS NOT GUARANTEED THAT A CHILD MAY ATTEND THE SCHOOL THEY CHOOSE.  For instance, Ashton Elementary was not open for choice this year (1999-2000) because it has no available seats.

Also, several of the schools have specific entrance criteria.  For instance, the Bay Haven School of Basics Plus is a magnet elementary school which emphasizes self-discipline, basic skills and strong parental involvement.  This is a popular program and there is usually a waiting list to enter.  Pine View is a district wide school for gifted students in grades 2-12.  Oak Park School serves students who are assessed with various moderate to severe handicapping conditions.  The CYESIS Program is for school age parents designed to help these students not only complete their coursework, but also receive parenting instruction while their babies receive childcare.  Each school's staff has information on these programs and their phone numbers are included with the school's information below.

Some of the high schools offer specific programs within their school, which are open to all district students.  They include:
Booker High School Visual and Performing Arts (VPA
Booker High School Law Academy
Riverview High School International Baccalaureate (IB)
Sarasota High School Math, Science, Technology (MaST) which has two disciplines:
The Research Institute
The Health Science Technology
All of these programs have specific entrance requirements and each school should be contacted for information.

There are Second Chance Schools for students who may be in danger of dropping out of school.  Schools or parents may refer students to these programs.  For information call 927-9000 and ask for the Second Chance Schools contact person.

And finally, The district also offers charter schools in collaboration with community groups seeking other alternatives to traditional school.  For information call 927-9000 and ask for the charter school contact person.
